Q

How large is the Maret?

A

Maret typically enrolls 635 students in grades K-12, all on one campus:
Kindergarten through 4th grade (Lower School) averages 130 students
5th through 8th grades (Middle School) averages 200 students
9th through 12th grade (Upper School) averages 305 students

Q

Does Maret have a school uniform?

A

No, however students are expected to dress neatly and appropriately.

Q

What are the hours for the school day?

A

Lower School is in session 8 am - 3 pm.

Middle School is in session 8 am - 3:10 pm.

Upper School is in session 8:10 am - 3:10 pm.

Every Wednesday, the school day ends at 1:30 pm.

Upper School sports begin either at 3:30 or 4 pm and last until 5:30 or 6 pm. These times may change if practice is cancelled or when there is an away game.

Does Maret offer before- and after-school care?

A

Maret offers an engaging after-school program for kindergarten through eighth grade; it ends at 6 pm.

There is no morning care for Lower School students; students are welcome to arrive at 7:45 am – 15 minutes before the start of the school day.

Middle and Upper School students may arrive on campus as early as 7:15 am.

What is Maret's student-teacher ratio?

There is one teacher for every six students at Maret (1:6)

Does Maret provide bus or van service?

A

Maret does not provide bus transportation. However, we are a short 10-minute walk from both the Woodley Park/Adams Morgan and Cleveland Park stops on Metro’s Red Line. There is also Metrobus service directly in front of the campus.

Maret does provide bus transportation to and from all away games for students participating in team sports.

What is Maret's tuition?

A

The 2012-2013 school year tuition is:

Kindergarten - 4th grade $28, 450
5th - 8th grade $30, 850
9th - 12th grade $32, 745

Financial aid is available and all applicants are welcome to apply for assistance.

Student Life

Q

At what age do interscholastic sports begin?

A

Seventh and eighth graders play interscholastic team sports; these sports are played during the last two periods of the regular school day.

Upper School interscholastic teams practice and play their games after school.

Q

Can my child play sports and still participate in bands, choirs, plays or musicals?

A

Yes. Art and music are a part of the regular school day for all students. Beginning in Middle School, there are extracurricular (outside of class) options in visual and performing arts as well.

In Lower and Middle School, physical education and team sports take place during the regular school day four days a week. Upper School students participate in sports after school, beginning at 3:30 pm.

Middle School play and musical rehearsals begin at 3:30 pm. Upper School rehearsals start at 5:30 pm, after sports practice.

How many new students are enrolled in each grade?

A

Enrollment varies from year to year, but here is a typical profile:

Kindergarten: 20 new students
1st grade: 5 - 7 new students
2nd and 3rd grades: new students enrolled only if space becomes available
4th grade: 7 - 10 new students
5th grade: new students enrolled only if space becomes available
6th grade: 10 - 15 new students
7th grade: 5 - 7 new students
8th grade: new students enrolled only if space becomes available
9th grade: 20 - 25 new students
10th grade: 6 - 8 new students
11th grade: 1 - 3 new students

What are the age requirements for applicants?

A

Students applying to kindergarten must be five years old by September 1st of their kindergarten year. Students applying to first grade must be six years old by September 1st of their first grade year.

When are applications due?

A

For FOURTH GRADE: Applications are due December 28, 2012 at noon.

Teacher recommendations, testing reports, transcripts, and all other supporting material for students applying to the fourth grade must be received in the Admission Office by January 13, 2013.

ALL OTHER GRADES: Applications are due January 7, 2013.

Teacher recommendations, testing reports, and all other supporting material for students applying to all other grades must be received in the Admission office by January 25, 2013.

Does Maret require applicants to tour the school?

A

Maret STRONGLY ENCOURAGES all families to take a tour of campus before applying. Tours give families a chance to see the Maret campus and classes in action. Tours can be scheduled online (a link is located on the Admission Process page on the left), or by calling the Admission Office directly at 202-939-8814.

Can my child accompany me on my tour of Maret?

A

Lower School tours are for parents or guardians only; however children applying to Lower School are always welcome to visit the campus during our annual Admission Open House (see link in left menu).

We encourage students applying to Middle and Upper School to join their parents for a small group tour.

Q

When is the Admission Open House?

A

The Admission Open House is Sunday, December 2, 2012.

The Lower School program begins at 12 noon and lasts until 2 pm. There is no need to pre-register; however, we encourage you to arrive on time in order to take advantage of the full program. Children are welcome.

The Middle and Upper School programs begin at 2:15 pm and last until 4:15 pm. There is no need to pre-register; however, we encourage you to arrive on time to take advantage of the full program. Students are welcome.

When do Lower School applicants visit Maret?

A

Families are able to schedule visits for kindergarten, first and fourth grade applicants once they have submitted their applications. You may schedule the visit using your online admission account.

Kindergarten visits take place on Wednesday afternoons in January and February; we also offer morning visits during the week of February 13.

First grade visits take place in the mornings and afternoons during the week of February 11.

Fourth grade visits take place in the mornings and afternoons during the week of January 21.

Q

Can my child apply to Maret for a non-expansion year?

A

We accept applications to all grades. The Admission Office will collect teacher recommendations, grades, and testing, but students will be asked to visit only if we are aware that there is an opening in the grade into which you hope to apply. Q

When will we hear if our child has been accepted to Maret?

A

Maret notifies parents of our admission decision, by mail, in early March.
