CENTRAL TIME
Middle School Curriculum
Middle School is a time of transition, a period of great personal challenge and excitement. Maret seizes the inherent energy and curiosity of students in fifth through eighth grades, captures their attention and imagination, and helps each child forge the brink between childhood and young adulthood.
Our program is specifically geared to provide the learning tools and social skills needed to face the academic rigors and increased personal responsibility that lie ahead. Through incremental independence and nurtured risk-taking, middle schoolers gain confidence as learners and leaders. The curriculum exposes the depth and breadth of each academic course, while systematically bolstering the basic study skills necessary to ensure success in higher grades.
Middle school students tackle English, history and mathematics; science, modern language and Latin; art, music, drama and technology; study skills and library skills; physical education and human development. Their days hum with activity and variety. Classes, group debates, and sessions with upper school mentors provide an open forum for discussing social issues facing today’s adolescents. Assemblies, sports, service learning, community service, clubs, and supervised off-campus adventures ensure that every middle school student is exposed to the widest range of choices, the better to fine-tune their emerging talents and hold their ever-shifting interests.
Advisors are assigned to each middle school child. Usually a classroom teacher or coach familiar with the individual student, the advisor provides an important link between the students, teachers, and parents. To further support the students, teachers and parents are encouraged to meet and discuss any academic or social challenges as they arise. Written progress reports are sent home quarterly. Grade level deans work closely with students, faculty, advisors, and parents to ensure class unity and cohesion throughout the middle school years.
