FULL SWING

Upper School Curriculum

Upper School: perpetual motion! So full, so rich, it’s nearly impossible to capture in words. With the vast assortment of academic choices, the wide array of extracurricular activities and the sprawling social opportunities, you’d be hard-pressed to seize every opportunity Maret offers. But that doesn’t keep our upper schoolers from trying!

Independence, responsibility, and informed choice are hallmarks of Maret’s Upper School and its renowned personalized education program. Whether in the classroom, on stage, in the community, or on the playing fields, ninth graders through twelfth graders are exercising their ability to experiment, discern, focus, and determine. As they wield these new skills, Maret’s faculty is there to teach, guide, and support, helping smooth the way through high school to graduation.

Beginning in ninth grade, students are able to make selections in art, language, and performing arts. By eleventh grade, the number of elective courses is dramatic; in a typical year, upper school students can choose from approximately 27 humanities courses, 12 offerings in math and science, 15 language classes, 13 performing or visual arts classes, and a variety of technology courses. All courses from tenth through twelfth grade are considered advanced-level classes; students who opt to take the Advanced Placement (AP) tests are well prepared to do so.

Maret students have worked hard and have been well prepared for the rigors of Upper School; the payback is impressive. Our students continually attain outstanding honors in national and regional competitions, including the National Latin Exam and the Scholastic Art Competition. This is particularly remarkable when you realize that Maret is often the smallest school competing for these accolades.

Especially impressive is Maret’s college placement record. Experienced and caring college counselors work with families to guide students toward colleges that fit their personal needs. The college application process is the culmination of an upper school program that blends rigorous academics, compelling extracurricular choices and numerous leadership opportunities with the life skills, caring, and commitment necessary for higher education.
