Diversity at Maret
Inspiring Voices
Important as it is to look around you and see a diverse world, it’s equally important to recognize yourself in the faces and viewpoints of people you admire. Maret’s faculty members serve as important role models, reflecting the diversity of our student body. They are a valuable inspiration as students begin to picture themselves as future adults: Strong. Caring. Successful. Maret actively recruits faculty that mirror the ethnic, cultural, social, and political face of our student body. We respect the differences expressed by our teachers and support our faculty with a variety of professional development opportunities.
Black Student Fund Education, Race, and Equity (ERE) Classes
Many Maret teachers choose to attend an eight-week professional development course offered by the Black Student Fund, a local non-profit educational resource center. The course is designed to enhance faculty understanding of the issues and concerns that face African- American students and families.
Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network (GLSEN)
GLSEN is a national organization focused on ending anti-gay bias in K-12 schools. GLSEN works to assure that each member of the school community is valued and respected, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity /expression.
Seeking Education, Equity, and Diversity (SED) Seminar
Monthly SEED seminars enable faculty to examine contemporary scholarship as well as the “textbooks of our lives,” encouraging communal conversation about education and culture.
Faculty Diversity Committee
The Faculty Diversity Committee meets throughout the year to discuss a variety of issues, including sexual orientation, socialization, race relations, and multicultural education.
Maret Diversity Initiatives Fund
This fund provides financial support for faculty professional development pertaining to the integration of multicultural curriculum and programs and optimizing the experience of students of color and their peers.
