After Prom Party
-
Eleventh grade parents host a spring after prom party for juniors and seniors that features fun, food, and prizes. Upper school volunteers from all grades are needed to help plan and chaperone the event.
-
Class Activities
-
Parents are needed throughout the year to assist in various class activities. Some of these activities include welcoming families who are new to Maret, helping to organize field trips or other student activities and chaperoning school events.
-
Class Email List Moderators
-
Parents in each class are contacted throughout the year through an email list specific to each child's grade. Moderators administer content, update parent email addresses, and post class-wide announcements. Class email lists are used for MPA-related announcements only.
-
Class Representatives
-
Class Representatives are selected for each grade during the spring/summer before school starts. They coordinate volunteers for field trips, student activities as requested by their class teachers, school-related parent and student gatherings, community service activities, the Scholarship Auction, the Fête Champêtre, and faculty/staff appreciation breakfasts. Class Representatives also serve as class treasurers and as liaisons for the Auction and Fête. They attend MPA morning meetings four times a year (all parents are welcome at these meetings; times and dates are listed in the school calendar), and meet periodically with the MPA Vice President of the Division and the Director of the Division. If you have questions about school activities, procedures, meetings, or events, you may contact a Class Representative who will either help you with your questions or direct you to the appropriate staff or faculty member.
In the beginning of the school year, Class Representatives coordinate potluck dinners on campus for parents to socialize and discuss upcoming school events. From time to time, Class Representatives may coordinate other parent and/or student activities including picnics, bowling parties, etc. These events are held on campus or at an appropriate site during the evenings or weekends to ensure the time and setting are convenient and welcoming for all families. If you are interested in serving as a Class Representative, please contact the appropriate MPA Division Vice President.

Community Service/ Service Learning
-
The MPA works closely with the faculty to strengthen Maret’s community service and service learning programs. Parent drivers provide transportation for students participating in off-campus activities, and accompany student groups on Community Service Day.
-
Diversity Committee
-
This committee meets several times a year and welcomes parents who are interested in furthering and supporting racial, ethnic, cultural, religious, sexual orientation, and socio-economic diversity in the School. Members help the school with admissions recruiting and organize dinners for new parents of color in the fall. They may also host a variety of events of interest, and produce occasional lectures and programs for the Maret community.
-
Fête Champêtre
-
Maret’s oldest tradition, the Fête Champêtre, is our school-wide spring fair. Two parents chair this event and work with a committee of booth chairs from each grade for such activities as the bake sale, games, etc. The Fête is held on a Saturday in May and many parent volunteers are needed to prepare food items and work on the day of this festivity.
-
Homecoming
-
A traditional school-wide activity, Homecoming takes place in October. Students in the Middle and Upper Schools organize small class booths. Parents oversee these activities and plan a delightful fall day of sports and fun for the entire Maret community.
-
Library Volunteers
-
Work in solitude or in the midst of student life. Parent volunteers assist librarians in a variety of tasks, including book processing, creating displays, shelving, and circulation.
-
Maret Annual Fund
-
The Annual Fund, Maret’s second largest source of income, helps to cover daily operational costs that cannot be funded by tuition alone. Volunteers call other Maret parents for their support of the Annual Fund. Contact Director of Annual Giving Suzanne Burrows at 202-939-4050.
-
MPA Nominating Committee
-
The committee consists of seven people: a chair and two representatives from the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools. This committee meets in the spring and puts forth a slate for the MPA Executive Committee to serve for the following year.
-
Parent Ambassadors
-
The Admission Office welcomes volunteers to join the Parent Ambassador program and assist with any or all of the following admission activities: attending school recruitment fairs, helping to host the annual Open House, assisting families with the application process, welcoming accepted families at the spring receptions, and serving as a new parent liaison. We suggest this activity is best suited for families not going through the admission process. A training session is offered in the fall. For more information, contact the Admission Office at 202-939-8814.
-
Parents Council Representative
-
Two parent representatives from Maret attend the meetings of the Parent Council of Washington, a parent volunteer organization representing over 60 independent schools. The Council meets several times a year at different schools and the representatives serve as a liaison between the Council, the School, and parents.
-
Peer Groups
-
Parent Peer Groups are held usually two or three times a year by grade. The groups generally meet in the Woodley Library in the evening. Peer group facilitators organize and help keep the conversations centered on social and developmental issues. Information shared remains confidential. The group's goal is to share information, ideas and concerns about parenting issues as they pertain to the ages of their children.
-
Scholarship Auction
-
Working on the Auction is rewarding and fun, and there are many opportunities to make a small or a large commitment to this fund-raiser for our financial aid program. The MPA-sponsored Auction is held in February, with work beginning in September. Help is needed in solicitation, data entry, decorations, and work on the days and evenings immediately preceding the Auction.
-
School Store
-
Volunteers help staff the school store, which sells Maret logo items and school supplies. Volunteers should be available at lunchtime, before/after school, and/or during special events such as Homecoming and the Fête.
