Sustainability at Maret

Maret’s sustainability efforts strive to model earth-friendly living for our community. In addition to moving towards green buildings and grounds, we are equally committed to engaging in green habits:

  • On-site energy conservation
  • Water conservation
  • Waste reduction
  • Helping staff, students, and families decrease their ecological footprint

It's Easy Being Green!

In just a few short years, Maret’s commitment to sustainability has yielded some very impressive results!

  • Our textbook recycling initiative has raised $1120 for Horizons and prevented 74 books from entering the landfill.
  • Recycling contamination has dropped on our campus from 33% to 18%.
  • Maret’s electricity  use is offset with 100% wind energy credits.
  • Thanks to Green School Supply, shopping is quick and easy!
  • The eighth grade service learning course wrapped up a very successful campaign focused on CFL (compact florescent light bulbs) education.
  • Thanks to the hard work of several students on the Sustainability Committee Maret was recently recognized as a Green Flag School.
  • Maret won the first ever D.C. area Green Schools Challenge and at the same time reduced its Carbon Footprint by 15,000 pounds.
  • There are lots of new green features on Maret's campus like petroleum free plastic cups, biodegradable hot beverage cups, dual-flush toilets, and waterless urinals.
