Student Life

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM, the Maret experience continues to unfurl. A wide array of extracurricular activities opens students’ imaginations to new hobbies, new passions, and new ways of thinking. In addition to sports and drama productions, students sample a banquet of choices that includes the school newspaper; our award-winning literary arts magazine; student government; the yearbook; Gay-Straight Alliance; debate, math and engineering clubs; Diversity at Maret; Action for Women; the It’s Academic team, the National Geographic Bee, and much more.

One of the most popular programs at Maret is our Intensive Study Week—ISW for short. Every February, students engage in a week of hands-on learning. Regular classes are suspended, new horizons blazed! An exploration of Washington-area architecture, Civil-War Battlefields, Backpacking in the Grand Canyon, and the design and construction of Adirondack Chairs are but a few examples of our stimulating ISW choices.

BEYOND CAMPUS, our unique location, in walking distance of Metro and close to boundless cultural and civic resources, makes the Nation’s Capital a readily accessible extension of Maret. Whether it’s through a community service project, a student-sponsored advocacy group, a morning of research at the Library of Congress, an evening at the theatre, or a year of mentoring young students from other cultures, Maret students make the most of the diverse resources Washington provides. The H.D. Cooke Mentoring and Tutoring Program, Folger Shakespeare Festival, Woodley Society, Horizons at Maret, and the Model U.S. Congress are but a few of myriad Washington-based activities that create a link between Maret students, their city, and the residents of our community.

BEYOND WASHINGTON, numerous options foster a national and global perspective in Maret students. Service learning projects focus on topics of worldwide concern, such as hunger and human rights. Amnesty International, Students for Environmental Action and our Model United Nations team let students invest their interests in activities that “make a difference.” Travel opportunities during ISW and over the summer introduce new languages, new customs, and new friendships. Perennial favorites are our extended visits to Costa Rica and Sanibel Island, Florida.
