Performing & Visual Arts
Performing and visual arts are a vital part of the Maret experience, with art required through ninth grade. From kindergarten through Upper School, students are encouraged to explore their individual creative talents and to leave an artistic imprint that’s uniquely their own.
Artistic
Maret’s fine arts curriculum is studio-centered and seeks to cultivate understanding, appreciation and self-expression through the visual arts. As you wander through our hallways, you can’t help but notice the vibrant display of student artwork—an impressive testament to the strength of our program and the myriad talents of our young artists. The annual All-School Art Show showcases a masterpiece by every Maret art student. Photography, ceramics, woodworking, painting and self-portraiture are among the plentiful artistic avenues students can explore at Maret.
Musical
Musical skills are nurtured in a comprehensive program that involves performing, singing, reading, composing, and movement. Students gain confidence and hone their abilities through a great number of performance opportunities, both on and off campus. Visiting ensembles from across the country further enhance the learning experience, as Maret students learn to become discerning and appreciative audiences. Older students benefit from individualized instruction, while continuing to perfect their talents as part of a performing ensemble.
Dramatic
From Lower School on, dramatic arts are incorporated as part of the Maret education. Opportunities for dramatic expression abound. For instance, fourth graders write, produce, and star in their own all-grade production. Drama class in seventh and ninth grade introduces students to every phase of play production from “casting” to “curtain call.” Budding thespians can choose to take part in plays and musicals in both the Middle and Upper Schools. Rave reviews abounded for our recent Upper School productions of Les Misérables, Kiss Me Kate, Damn Yankees, A Chorus Line and Stephen Sondheim’s challenging Merrily We Roll Along. Bravo!
