Sports and Athletics at Maret

Athletics

From team sports, to independent physical pursuits, to more traditional “PE” classes, athletics round out the educational experience at Maret. Fitness is essential to a student’s well-being; however, we believe that athletics also teach important life skills that stretch beyond the body. Hard work, personal accomplishment, good sportsmanship, self-discipline, and cooperative action are instilled on our fields and courts from the earliest years at Maret, straight through senior year. Physical education classes are held four times a week, beginning in the Lower School. Maret prides itself on being one of the only independent schools that requires PE for every student, every year.

Teamwork

Fifth and sixth graders focus on team skills and individual sports strategies. By seventh and eighth grades, students of all ability levels apply and expand these skills by participating in interscholastic soccer, football, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, baseball, softball, and lacrosse. Teams continue to be a vital part of Maret education through high school. In recent years we have added golf, equestrian, and swim teams to reflect the evolving interests and developing skills of our student body. Maret girls compete in the Independent School League; boys compete in the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Achievement

By the time you reach Upper School, athletic options are virtually endless. Students choose from interscholastic team sports; individual concentrations such as martial arts, dance, and weight training; or a general physical education class. Have a particular athletic interest not offered at Maret? Opt to craft a supervised independent study in the sport of your choice.
