Community Service at Maret
Together with Service Learning, Community Service plays a critical role in Maret’s mission to “prepare [its] students to be healthy, responsible, and informed adults who will play an active role in improving the rule world they will inherit.” Community Service distinguishes itself from Service Learning in that it is primarily extracurricular and student-initiated.
Community Service
In the Upper School, Community Service projects are designed by individuals, the Student Council, and the Community Service Club. Some projects, such as the mentoring at H.D. Cooke, are long-term partnerships; others, such as book drives and construction projects, are designed to match immediate community needs with students’ interests and skills. Students also participate in annual fundraisers such as the AIDS Walk and the Help the Homeless Walk-a-Thon. In addition, many students choose to spend their summer months or their senior project periods working with local and international service organizations.
Community Service Day
Each year the entire Upper School joins together for Community Service Day in early November. Students and faculty spread throughout the D.C. area to volunteer at around thirty service organizations, including Martha’s Table, the Mazique Parent-Child Center, Iona Senior Services, and Behrend Builders, among many others.
