Martha's Table

Over the past several years, through the major service learning initiative in the Lower School, students have been carefully cultivating a relationship with Martha's Table, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to fulfilling the needs of low-income and homeless children, families, and individuals in Washington, DC. Though the Lower School has a longstanding tradition of making soup for Martha's Table's food distribution program, three years ago, Maret began exploring ways for Lower School classes to forge a more dynamic, deeper relationship.

Since then, each class goes to Martha's Table two or three times during the school year, providing an opportunity for children to put names to faces and build on consecutive experiences. Our students work closely with their classroom teachers to develop activities designed to enrich the preschool curriculum at Martha's Table. These projects may also tie into their own studies at Maret. After each visit our students reflect on their experiences and apply what they have learned when creating subsequent lessons. This program gives the entire Lower School the opportunity to cultivate interpersonal and academic growth through service learning.
