Service Learning

  • Welcome!

At Maret, we believe that our students, from our youngest kindergarteners to our graduating seniors, have much to give to their communities—and much to learn from them. In that spirit, our School has made a major commitment to promoting service learning throughout its curriculum. Service learning is an innovative teaching approach that incorporates projects in our community into traditional academic courses. Students use and build upon their academic and interpersonal skills as they engage directly with local and national organizations. We believe that service learning directly supports the core of our educational mission: to prepare our students to be healthy, responsible, and informed adults who will play an active role in improving the world they will inherit.

  • History

In March 2002, Maret School was awarded a generous two-to-one matching grant from the Edward E. Ford Foundation to promote service learning at Maret and other independent schools in the Washington D.C. area. Thanks to contributions from Maret’s parents and alumni totaling $200,000, Maret was able to secure the full $100,000 grant. This money has enabled Maret to establish a teacher training institute and to support resulting service learning courses during the following academic year. The Edward E. Ford funding also ensures that service learning becomes an integral part of Maret’s curriculum. Maret aims to promote effective service learning in the wider independent school community by sharing best practices, ideas, and examples of our work.
