Part-Time CDL Driver

Maret School is seeking a part-time, experienced bus driver to join our team operating our fleet of buses. The driver will work closely with the school’s transportation manager to fulfill scheduled routes in the DC Metro Area and will report to the director of facilities. Trips will originate from Maret located at 3000 Cathedral Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20008. During the school year, routes will typically be Monday–Friday from 2:00pm–6:00pm with occasional weekend and evening routes. This summer, routes will include  early pick-ups (6:00am–9:00am), a mid-day (10:00am–2:00pm) shuttle, and evening drop-offs (3:00pm–4:00pm). A 3-hour minimum will be paid for any route that is driven. Other related duties may be assigned from time to time to meet the school’s needs. The ideal candidate will have deep experience driving buses in the region, specifically carrying children, strong verbal communication skills, and be committed to providing excellent customer service on every trip.

Driving

  • Arrive to work in time for scheduled shifts and vehicle inspections
  • Drive school vehicles following a set schedule or route
  • Patiently navigate of DC rush-hour traffic while maintaining established schedules
  • Gain familiarity with typical routes by studying maps if necessary and reading reports

Safety

  • Inspect vehicle(s) at the beginning and the end of any shift to ensure proper functioning and document any mechanical difficulties identified
  • Follow all traffic laws and posted speed limits, even at the expense of arriving late at destinations
  • Report any unsafe conditions or road hazards to the transportation manager
  • Ensure that passengers are safely loaded and unloaded from their buses

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Stamina to sit for several hours at a time
  • Hand-eye coordination to operate vehicles while observing surroundings
  • Ability to effectively read, write and otherwise communicate in English
  • Capable of bending, stretching, reaching, lifting and/or standing for extended periods and the ability to carry, lift, or drag heavy items (up to 50 pounds)
  • Close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to hear voices, alarms, bells, and horns
  • Willingness to work overtime as needed


A successful candidate will have the following qualifications and skills:

  • Active CDL Class B license with P, and S endorsements. Air brake a plus
  • Valid current medical certificate
  • Two recent consecutive years of driving experience
  • Five years of a clean driving record
  • Be at least 25 years of age for insurance purposes
  • Ability to adhere to all DC Department of Transportation regulations and requirements
  • Ability to pass a background investigation, drug screen, and license-required physical exam
  • Verification of prior employment
