School Theme and Community Read

Last Thursday, we held our final full faculty meeting of the year and bid farewell to our colleagues who are leaving Maret for new destinations. Middle and Upper School teachers finished up their grading so that we are able to send home reports in the next day or so. Lower School teachers prepared their classrooms so that our 140 Horizons students can begin their six-week enrichment program on our campus starting next week.

We also began to turn our attention to the upcoming academic year and discussed our new theme: Be Present. These are two simple words that together challenge all of us to stop, breathe, and be fully present in the moment that surrounds us. Being truly attentive, listening carefully to others, staying focused on the task at hand are gifts that pay large dividends.

And as we know, being present is not always easy to do. Navigating a world in which we are increasingly bombarded by sources of distraction is not only a Maret phenomenon, its consequences are being felt across the nation and globe.

One area that can interfere with being present is the omnipresent smartphone and other forms of technology. This summer our faculty will read: Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World by Cal Newport. As the author notes: “the urge to pick up our phones every few minutes has become a nervous twitch that shatters our time into shards too small to be present. Our addiction to tech leaves us exhausted and overwhelmed.”

We invite you to read this book as well. In the fall, we will review the issues raised in the book in various venues, including an evening panel discussion with our parents. I hope you will join us in these conversations.

I wish you all a joyful and safe summer filled with moments of being present and look forward to seeing you in September.
