Mission
Maret is a vibrant, K–12 independent school in Washington, DC. We ignite our students' potential; foster their academic, artistic, and athletic talents; and promote their well-being. We develop the mind, nurture curiosity, welcome challenge, embrace joy, and build community that is equitable and inclusive.
Educational Philosophy
We believe that learning happens in a strong, collaborative community—one built on a foundation of trusting relationships, mutual respect, and connectedness with each other and the world around us.
We believe in knowing and valuing each student as a unique individual. We trust that when students learn and demonstrate their comprehension in different ways, they better understand themselves as learners and develop autonomy in their educational journey.
We believe that learning should include a dynamic interplay of academics, the arts, athletics, and wellness and should encourage healthy, continuous exploration and expression of the authentic self.
We believe that curiosity, resilience, and responsibility are essential components of learning. We strive to create a supportive environment that fosters productive struggle and intellectual risk-taking, encourages students to lean into discomfort, and embraces failure and deep reflection as essential to both intellectual and personal growth.
We believe students must develop the knowledge, skills, and experiences needed to understand broader communities and their cultural contexts. This understanding prepares students for meaningful engagement with the world beyond Maret.
