We all anticipate with both great excitement and some anxiety the beginning of a new school year. With the changes and challenges facing us this fall, for me, these feelings are greatly heightened. I started my day joining Mr. Redd on a Zoom assembly, welcoming the middle schoolers to this academic year; then, I took a short tour around campus to greet our small clusters of Kindies and first graders who are with their teachers two days a week in the mornings. Later, we had a full Upper School assembly! I am thrilled to welcome all of us to the 2020-2021 academic year.
As many of you witnessed last week when picking up your Maret supply “kits,” our team has done an amazing job preparing for a safe opening. We will be looking for more opportunities to bring all of our students to campus for various community building events, as well as monitoring the local landscape to determine when we might be able to open up even more. For now, we do believe that delivering our academic program virtually through COL is the best option. Please continue to go into the Parent Portal to get the most up-to-date information. All the divisional handbooks are now posted there as well.
In the spirit of keeping our community connections strong during this time, please also take a moment to look closely at the school calendar and note important upcoming events—the New Parent Receptions, the Zoom, Meet, and Greet for our families whose children identify as people of color, Back-to-School Nights, and Class Kick-offs. We’ll see each other online for these virtual events, and you’ll be hearing more about them soon.
Next week, Thursday, September 17 from 5:00–6:00 p.m., we will be hosting a conversation with Jess Matthews and Aaron Cahn (our learning specialists) and LaNaadrian Easterling (our director of counseling) along with Dominic Redd and Steven Tejada. They will discuss how we can best support our students in grades 7–12 during COL—a Zoom invitation will be circulated closer to the event.
We will be conducting regular surveys to gauge how the enhancements to COL are serving our students and what adjustments we might consider. The first one will be sent out the week of September 21.
All the division directors and I will be in regular communication with you as we fulfill our theme: Standing Together.
