Continuity of Learning (COL)
Middle School
I am hopeful that in the near future, I will be able to see and hear all of our students’ joyful greetings in the Middle School hallway again. With this “new normal,” I know that the days are blending together and the ability to stay socially distant is weighing heavily on all of us. But with our COL schedules, we hope that we can help bring some routines back to your homes. Until we return to our hallways in the Middle School, stay safe and healthy. I can't wait to see you online soon.

May 4, 2020 - Middle School Announcements
Dear Middle School families,
I hope May is going to bring some nicer weather. I wish that we can all get closer to some semblance of normal again (whatever that may look like).
I hope that the COL is working better for you and your families. We expect that our middle schoolers are getting tired of the routine and bored of social distancing. I know that it is not the ideal learning environment for all but we are trying to make it as smooth and accessible as possible. We have taken a lot of the parent feedback and have incorporated many of the suggestions. We hope that you see improvements in streamlining information in PowerSchool. Our teachers are adding assignments to the calendars to make sure that you have a quick and easy way to see what’s coming up.
In addition, some of our teachers will be adding synchronous class time into existing asynchronous times (this means that no changes have been made to the existing schedule except that there may be some additional synch time). The new schedules were sent to you earlier today and are at this link. Teachers have already notified students about these changes. Some may be using them as synchronous class time, while others may be using the additional time as available proctored work time with the teacher. This is especially true for classes who are working towards major end-of-the-year projects. (The GoogleSheet is linked here for easy access).
Office Hours are an important resource in the COL and we strongly encourage you to send your children to visit with teachers during their Office Hours to help them get feedback on assignments, stay organized, or just to say hello.
Lastly, some of our clubs are running virtual meetings. Students were invited to join via email. Please have them email me if they are interested in joining Bridge Club (Wednesdays) or Makerspace Club (Thursdays).
The New Schedule
Please watch the video that was sent from Marjo which explains our new schedule. Maria Lopez and I will be hosting a zoom call for parents this Friday, May 8 at 10:30am to answer any questions that you may have about the shifts that we are making. Refer to my email message to access the Zoom link.
We will also be talking to students in Advising and Class Meetings this week and next week about the changes to the schedule along with the transition to the next grade level.
Rising 9th grade Registration
8th grade families should have received an email from me about registration for Upper School courses. The first email is a series of links to videos introducing the Arts choices and Language choices. The second email will be sent with a Google Form which should be completed by the parent or guardian. We are also planning a parent meeting next week (Thursday, May 14 at 9:30am) to introduce you to the US Administration and to answer any questions you have about the transition to the Upper School.
Office Hours with Maret Alumni
We wanted to share a great opportunity with you and your kids. A group of Maret alumni and some of their wonderful college peers are managing an open mentoring/tutoring program. They are scheduled daily at 9-4pm excluding 1-2pm, where tutors are available on Zoom. Students call in office-hours style. If someone is already working with a tutor, they just wait for a few minutes until they finish up. Refer to my email message to access the Zoom link.

We hope that you all have a relaxing next few weeks. We appreciate that parenting during this pandemic has been tough. All of you are dealing with so many different pressures at home, while also trying to create a conducive learning environment for your children. Thank you for being such great parents and partners with Maret. We miss seeing all of you and hope that you are all safe and healthy.

April 10, 2020 - Spring Progress Reports - 5th, 6th, 7th Grades
Dear Middle School Families,
We hope that you had a good week, both in staying healthy and in building routines. We continue to strive to create meaningful lessons that our students can work on both synchronously and asynchronously as we try to preserve as much of the essential content and skills of our curriculum and we hope our efforts are resonating with the students.
The Spring Progress Reports will be available online via the Parent Portal on Monday after 12:00pm. Our teachers needed a little more time to complete these so I will send a note on Monday with the link and how to access the report.
You will see checklists that provide you with a quick snapshot of how your child is doing in Content, Skills and Preparation for their academic courses. You will also see comments that give you better context for the checkmark. Remember that NI means Needs Improvement, ME means Meets Expectations, and SS means Shows Strength. Progress grades are given in grades 6-12 only.
Advisor/Parent Conferences are coming up. You should be scheduled to "meet" with your child's advisor in the next few weeks. That time is a great opportunity to talk about the progress reports and how the COL is working for you and your child. It is also a great chance to check in to see if there are ways that we can better support your child in this new way of learning.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Christina

In addition to the checklists, 8th grade teachers have written the course recommendations for Math and Science in the comments section. If you have particular questions about the placement, please contact the teacher first to discuss the reasons for the placement. Please watch the videos attached about the Science and Math course sequence and placement process to help you understand the recommendations.
The Upper School registration process and information will be shared with you in the next few weeks. Language placement recommendations will be shared after the students choose the language that they would like to pursue in 9th grade.

April 6, 2020 - Buddy Program with Upper School
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Despite our current circumstances, Maret remains a K-12 community that values connections between our Lower, Middle, and Upper School students. To that end, we have assembled a program to match Lower and Middle School students with an Upper School buddy. The goal of this partnership would be to provide mentorship and support to our younger students and needed relief to parents and guardians during this challenging time. Activities could include reading a book together, playing a game, working on a class assignment, practicing an instrument, or just talking (all done through video conferencing). If you are interested in the Buddy Program, please fill out the survey below, and we will be back in touch through email to pair your child with an Upper School student. Thank you for your time!
Best,
Lynn Levinson

March 27, 2020 - Long-Term COL Plan
Dear Middle School Students and Parents,
I hope you are having a relaxing Spring Break. As Ms. Talbott mentioned in her recent update, we are not returning to campus until Monday, April 27 (although this could change to later depending on what happens in the next few weeks).
With this “new normal,” I know that the days are blending together and the ability to stay socially distant is weighing heavy on all of us, but we hope that we can help bring some routines back to your homes.
All of this information can be found on the Middle School Continuity of Learning (COL) section on the Maret website linked here.
MS Long Term Continuity of Learning (COL) Plan
Starting on Tuesday, March 31, we will be following our Long Term COL plan (with a Tuesday schedule). Our day starts at 9:00am and ends at 3:00pm. The video link here talks through the general differences in our new schedule. We have also linked the master schedule for you to study in more detail. Please organize your schedules around when the synchronous classes meet since your attendance is required for those synchronous meeting times.
The main highlights are listed below:
- Meetings once a week in Synchronous classes (live, online classes). These are reflected in the schedule attached. These include a weekly Advising time.
- Art, Music, and Wellness classes have been added into the schedule. (Design Thinking is added into the 7th grade only). These classes will offer weekly assignments via PowerSchool or email.
- PE classes will be running synchronous classes twice a week for 5th and 6th grade. PE classes will be once a week for 7th and 8th grade classes. These are synchronous times when students can follow a series of activities led by our Athletics department.
- Teachers will be available synchronously or via email once a week for students.
Synchronous Classes and COL Expectations
I have attached our online expectations for when students are in their synchronous classes. We ask that our parents help students follow these expectations.
During COL, all students and faculty are expected to uphold Maret's Mission and Core Values and abide by the School's Code of Conduct. Only faculty are to initiate, record, post, and share class videos. Students should not mute and/or disconnect any participant during a session.
DO
- Be courteous to other participants.
- Be punctual.
- Speak clearly and at a regular volume.
- Avoid eating during the sessions.
- Keep body movements and distractions, including other noise, to a minimum. Follow your teachers’ directions about muting mics and asking questions.
- “Be Present”—avoid interrupting others, having side conversations and text chats.
BE MINDFUL
- Of your distance from the camera and how you are seen on screen.
- That shades/blinds/curtains behind you should be closed to reduce glare.
- That everyone should be sitting at a suitable space prepared to work and avoid lounging on couches or beds.
- To avoid sitting outside to keep background noise to a minimum.
- That the school dress code is in effect during all sessions.
Homework and Grading/Assessments
Teachers will be more explicit about classwork expectations since we know that our students will need more guidance in completing their assignments online. PowerSchool was not as reliable as we had hoped so our teachers are posting their assignments both in PowerSchool and via email.
- Assignments will be both posted on PowerSchool and sent to the student’s email.
- These posts will be online by 9:00am.
- Teachers will also give an expected timeframe for each assignment so students can plan their time.
- Assignments will be marked as (I)-Individual (meaning that a student must do that assignment on their own) or (C)-Collaborative (they may be able to work with a person or small group but the expectations will be clearly stated for students). Even if an assignment is collaborative, students need to submit their own work.
- Teachers will give students the assignment value so that students are clear about grading expectations.
- Any online assessments must be done honestly and on their own. Teachers will be including an Integrity Statement on major assessments. They will put the statement at the end of the assessments with a line that requires the student to type their name on it. (The work I am submitting is mine and mine alone.)
Attendance
Students will need to attend all of their synchronous classes and meet the expectations of their daily homework. We will be taking attendance during our synchronous classes. Teachers will reach out to students if they did not attend their synchronous times and parents will also be notified by our Attendance Office. Parents, please let us know ahead of time if your child cannot attend a synchronous class. You should do this in the Parent Portal in Veracross.
Progress Reports and Parent/Advisor Conferences
Our Third marking period ended on Friday, March 20. Teachers are preparing Third quarter progress reports which will be shared on the Parent Portal on Friday, April 10 at the end of the day.
Students will receive a NI (Needs Improvement), ME (Meets Expectations), and SS (Shows Strength) in 7 different categories:
- Demonstrates understanding of content
- Demonstrates achievement in skills
- Preparedness (arrives on time with required materials, completes assignments on time, maintains an effective organization system)
- Engagement (stays focused and on task, listens actively to teachers and peers)
- Independence (is able to problem solve on their own; self-advocates appropriately)
- Responsiveness (incorporates suggestions for improvement, transitions effectively between activities; seeks help when needed)
- Citizenship (contributes to a positive and respectful learning environment, works effectively with a partner or in a group)
For 5th grade parents, the Progress Reports will reflect checklists and short comments that give context to the checkboxes.
For 6th, 7th, and 8th grade parents, the Progress Reports will reflect a progress grade, checklists, and short comments that give context to the checkboxes.
Conferences will be a little different this Spring. Advisors will schedule 30-45 minutes conference times with advisee parents. We decided to make this change to make this easier on both advisors, teachers, and parents. Advisors will send you possible times to schedule a conference over the next few weeks. These times will be scheduled between Thursday, April 16-Tuesday, April 21. Please look for an email from your child’s advisor. For 5th-7th grade advisor/parent conferences, these will be a good time to check in about your child’s progress and to discuss how the online learning is going. For 8th grade parents, the April Conferences will include the student who will participate in this conference. 21. Please note that originally classes were cancelled on April 17th for in-person Advisor Conferences. This is no longer the case and classes will now take place on that date.
Parent Survey
On Friday, April 3, We will open a survey for parents and guardians to give feedback about how the Continuity of Learning plan has been unfolding for their family. This anonymous survey will be open to parents and guardians in all divisions and will remain open indefinitely. The survey will be accessible through the parent portal on Veracross, and, especially in the first few weeks, we encourage you update us on your experience with the COL plan on a frequent basis.
The aggregate results for both of these surveys will be available to Marjo, Division Directors, and Department Chairs in real time, so we hope to be able to quickly assess and respond to what is working and what needs adjustment.
MS Musical Postponed (for now)
We know that our MS Musical performers and tech crew are worried that the musical may not happen. We are still hoping that it could be rescheduled. Please continue to practice and learn your lines.
Performing Arts Choice Forms
I will be sending out Performing Arts and Language Choice Google Forms to parents in the next few weeks. These forms help us determine next year’s performing arts courses. Please complete this form by Friday May 1.
- Students entering 5th and 6th grade will have two choices-Chorus or Band; Rising 6th graders will be able to choose whether or not they would like to switch to Beginning French as their language.
- Students entering 7th grade will have two choices—Chorus or Band. Rising 7th graders will be able to choose whether or not they opt-in to take Latin and whether or not they want to switch to Beginning Spanish (for students who have studied French).
- Students entering 8th grade will have four choices—Chorus, Band, Drama 8, and Tech Theatre.
If your child selects either Band or Chorus as their first choice, they will automatically get that as their course. I will only notify 8th grade families if you did not get your first choice in Tech Theatre 8 or Drama 8 courses.
We sincerely want you to find some moments of rest in the next few weeks. We are in this CoL for a month so we need to make sure that we are finding balance both in our work and our downtime. We hope that you are staying safe and helping to stop the spread. I will be sending students a Convocation video on Monday to help us get ready for this new week of learning.
Remember that you can always email advisors, teachers, and me with questions and concerns.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kyong

Our Mission
Maret is a vibrant, K–12, coeducational, independent school in Washington, DC. We ignite our students’ potential; foster their academic, artistic, and athletic talents; and promote their well-being. We develop the mind, nurture curiosity, welcome challenge, embrace joy, and build community that is equitable and inclusive.
- Essential Skills
- COL Goals
- COL Expectations
- Middle School Responsible Use Policy
- Digital Citizenship
- Grades and Assessments
Essential Skills
Beyond the content specific to designated academic courses, Maret teachers help students develop the essential skills they need to be well-rounded adults in a rapidly evolving world. Keeping true to our Mission, 0ur goal is for students to use these skills to inquire deeply, think critically, and act responsibly in all aspects of their lives.
COL Goals
The overarching goal of COL is to maintain strong relationships and high expectations among our students, our faculty, and our community.
Maret’s COL program will take place through a blended model of synchronous and asynchronous engagements designed to foster student learning, safety and belonging, and well-being.
COL Essentials
- Community connection of learners.
- Strong home-school partnership.
- Integrity of our excellent academic program.
- Ability to meet the needs of, and support, individual students.
COL Expectations
Addendum to COL Expectations
During COL, all members of our community are expected to uphold Maret's Mission and Core Values and abide by the School's Code of Conduct.
PARTICIPATION IN COL—Student responsibilities and guidelines for COL are no different than our accepted and understood campus teaching and learning expectations outlined in Maret’s Responsible Use Policies, Student and Faculty Handbooks, and Code of Conduct. These expectations are summarized below:
- Be courteous to other participants.
- Be punctual.
- Speak clearly and at a regular volume.
- Avoid eating during the sessions.
- Keep body movements and distractions, including other noise, to a minimum.
- Follow your teachers’ directions about muting mics and asking questions.
- “Be Present”—avoid interrupting others, having side conversations and text chats.
- Be mindful of your distance from the camera and how you are seen on screen.
- Be sure that shades/blinds/curtains behind you are closed to reduce glare.
- Be prepared by sitting at a suitable space prepared to work and avoid lounging on couches or beds.
- Avoid sitting outside to keep background noise to a minimum.
- The school dress code is in effect during all sessions.
USE OF COL PLATFORMS—Maret uses SeeSaw, PowerSchool, Zoom, Google Meet, and other online platforms/tools deemed appropriate by the School to conduct meaningful teaching and learning. COL platforms used by Maret are understood to be for school and educational use only. The use of these platforms for any other purpose without written consent by Maret School is prohibited. Failure to comply with this directive may result in disciplinary action.
COL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES—The Maret community understands and acknowledges that COL is a continuation of daily teaching and learning, not only for our faculty and students, but also for their parents and guardians. In addition to the expectations outlined above, it is critical to understand and abide by the following:
- Participants in a video conference (or any other aspect of COL) are expected to comport themselves as they would on campus. Only faculty are to initiate, record, post, and share class videos. Students should not mute and/or disconnect any participant during a session.
- As is provided during our on-campus program, advisors, teachers, learning specialists, and administrators often conduct one-to-one meetings with students when appropriate. These meetings usually entail academic and/or social-emotional support. Virtually, Maret faculty members may meet with students to discuss a range of educational, personal, and/or social development issues. Toward that end, participation in COL and its virtual one-on-one meetings constitutes acceptance of this approach and agreement to release and indemnify Maret and its faculty from any claim whatsoever in the implementation of services, including counseling and related emotional support sessions.
- Participants’ images, likenesses, or voices may be recorded while using Zoom, Google Meet, or other platforms. In some cases, such as recording of synchronous teacher-led lessons, these recordings will be made available for student review.
- Without express and written permission from a Division Director or Head of School, users (including students) may not record, screenshot, share, re-post, or otherwise capture or disseminate digital content created through these or any other platforms. Only representatives of the School may capture or post such content. Failure to comply with this directive may result in disciplinary action.
- Each platform that Maret employs for teaching and learning has specific user agreements. Please review these agreements.
While minimal, there may be risks related to the use of online platforms. As participants in COL, parents and guardians recognize and accept those risks. A student’s participation in school activities via COL serves as a student’s and parent’s/guardian’s acknowledgment and acceptance of Maret’s COL program and adherence to all of the COL Expectations, including this addendum.
Middle School Responsible Use Policy
Technology is a critical tool that helps us achieve Maret's Mission and Core Values by improving communication and collaboration, providing an authentic audience, and extending learning beyond the walls of the classroom while also building crucial digital citizenship skills.
Therefore, all middle school students are expected to abide by this Responsible Use Policy
Digital Citizenship
Digital citizenship is an essential skill for our students. Learning how to navigate the complex online world is a complicated process. As students enter the world of technology, we address each stage of this process to guide and help students make good decisions.
At Maret, we educate students to understand how to use technology responsibly and in positive ways. Our students learn strategies to navigate the social, emotional, and intellectual impact of a ever-changing technological world.
Maret is also committed to helping our families and community navigate technology. The resources on this page will help you make decisions that are appropriate for your family. While there may be a tendency to block or avoid technology, it is more effective to determine a positive approach and agree on the standards acceptable for your family.
Maret has partnered with Common Sense Media to provide additional resources for our community. Additionally, digital citizenship and technology workshops will be offered to families during the school year.

Grades and Assessments
Maret teachers in 6th through 8th Grades are going to continue to give letter grades for the fourth quarter. We believe that grades offer a more accurate assessment of our students’ progress than would a pass/fail designation. Maintaining our regular grading routines with clear rubrics and feedback loops will provide consistency for students in these uncertain times. Faculty recognize the increased challenges that accompany completing work through our COL plan and will develop curriculum and assessments that are sensitive to these new realities.
