How do you top a season where you mounted one of the greatest comebacks in Maret’s sporting history, rallying from a 6-0 deficit to upset the #1 ranked team 7-6 and snatch the DCSAA State Softball Championship title? The 2022 softball team followed it up with a 15-2 record, bulldozing through the ISL A Division undefeated and securing both the ISL A regular season and tournament championships—setting the stage to defend their DCSAA State Softball Championship title.
All spring, the team made their winning ways look easy—playing with an air of confidence without getting too cocky, making tough defensive plays look routine, and keeping each other loose without losing focus. What was it about this team that had them firing on all cylinders?
According to CJ Roy ’23, it’s a “mindset.” Offensively, the team was rock-solid from top to bottom, and the coaches encouraged players to be even more aggressive on the basepaths. Defensively, each and every player on the team made a critical play.
“There have been so many important plays that have been made, and they may not seem that important [in the moment] but it builds confidence,” says CJ. “Whether you’re winning 15-0 or battling it out at 2-1, it's…playing defense and contributing on offense—collectively.”
CJ quickly adds that the team’s success was not merely a matter of offense and defense—it was also a team culture that has been fostered over the years and most recently reinforced by seniors Isabella Lefkowitz-Rao and Margaret Todd. The two seniors “have a really good knowledge of the game and how to lead a team.” They are enthusiastic leaders who help boost everyone's energy.
Isabella took to her leadership role with aplomb, creating a team culture that strikes a balance: “playing loose but not sloppy…staying focused but not so stressed.” She remembers her time as a freshman and feeling proud when senior players cheered her on, helping her gain confidence and feel a part of the team. About this year’s players she says, ”We haven't ever lost our cool. I think that really comes from the team camaraderie that we’ve built and how everyone's really close with each other.”
In the seventh inning of the final game of their season at the DCSAA State Softball Championships, Maret was three outs away from victory. They were leading 7-3—two runners on, with no outs—when lightning flashed, and the game had to be postponed. The players had to reset and recalibrate, both physically and mentally, to play again in 24 hours. The Frogs returned to the diamond the following day, putting to test the team culture and mindset that were on display all season. Despite yielding two runs, the team was victorious 7-5, successfully defending their title and becoming back-to-back DCSAA State Softball Champions!
First-year head coach Janet Reed summed it up, “We've had an amazing season. I'm really proud of how hard they've worked and how far we've come. They've really put in the effort…we've asked them to just dig deeper and go a little bit harder, and just keep fighting. They've given us everything that we've asked for.”
In addition to the DCSAA State Softball title, DCSAA named Janet Reed Coach of the Year, and CJ Roy was Player of the Year. CJ was also named Gatorade Player of the Year for the second consecutive year. Congratulations!
