Graduating senior Ethan Michel ’26 was one of five Washington, DC students to be named a Milken Scholar this year. The scholarship program, which includes a $10,000 award and lifelong career support, recognizes students for their academic performance, leadership, community service, and perseverance in the face of challenges.

"I was excited to nominate Ethan for this honor and thrilled that he was chosen,” says Associate Director of College Counseling Jane Shiu. “Throughout his time at Maret, Ethan consistently demonstrated strong study habits, incisive critical thinking, and a deep engagement with all of his classes. His kind and friendly nature earned him the respect of his peers and teachers, and his leadership made Maret a more positive and connected community."

Cum Laude Society member, varsity athlete, and musician, Ethan was a standout student at Maret. Deeply committed to fostering respectful dialogue, inclusivity, and teamwork his leadership roles included captain of the soccer team, treasurer of the student council, leader of the Black Student Union and Handsome Black Men affinity group. In the community, he volunteered with Bethesda Soccer Club’s Buddy Camp and Opportunity Shop DC.

“The members of the Milken Scholars Class of 2026 remind us that the future belongs to those who never stop learning,” said Mike Milken. “In a world being reshaped by new technologies and new opportunities, they have already demonstrated a record of achievement and intellectual curiosity that will serve them well throughout their lives. This summer, Ethan attended the Milken Scholars Summit at American University. The theme for the summit, Leading in a New Era, was the jumping off point for mentorships and panel discussions with inspiring professionals in a broad range of fields. Ethan accepted his award, surrounded by the 2026 nominees, Milken Scholars alumni, Milken Scholars staff, and special guests.

Michel will study ethics, politics, and economics at Yale University and plans a career in law.

The Milken scholarship program, a joint initiative of the Milken Institute and the Milken Family Foundation, honors high school seniors in Washington, DC, Los Angeles County, and New York City each year with a $10,000 cash prize and lifelong access to college advising, career counseling, internship assistance, community service opportunities, and a fund to help with graduate school applications, unpaid internships, study abroad programs, and other costs associated with their career preparations.
