Maret Athletes Named Gatorade DC Players of the Year

This June, Quincy Allen ’21 and Caroline (CJ) Roy ’23 were honored among the best athletes in the nation by Gatorade. Allen was named DC Boys Basketball Player of the Year, and Roy was named DC Softball Player of the Year. Allen and Roy are the second Maret Gatorade Players of the Year to be chosen in their respective sports. Recent past winners include Luka Garza (Basketball, 2016-17) and Evelyn Gray (Volleyball, 2014-15)

In his sophomore year, Allen averaged 22.3 points and 10 rebounds a game and was a First Team Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference selection. An injury cut short his junior year season, but he came back strong as a senior to lead the team in non-conference play during a year upended by COVID-19.

Coach Chuck Driesell says of Allen, “Quincy has worked hard and overcome adversity and injury to continue his pursuit of becoming the best player he can. His perseverance and dedication have set an example for his teammates and peers that if you work hard good things will happen. There is no doubt he has a great future ahead of him.”

Roy led this year’s softball team to a 9–4 record overall and a DC State Athletic Association championship. Her record was 9–1 with a 2.59 ERA. Behind the plate, she had a .496 batting average and hit a grand slam in the DCSAA championship game to secure the team’s dramatic win.

“Caroline Roy is an incredibly talented, dual-threat softball player,” says Coach Madi Maldonado. “Offensively, she is a strong hitter with a mature mental approach at the plate. She is determined to get on base and cause chaos on the basepaths. As a pitcher, she strives to keep batters off-balance by mixing speeds. Caroline Roy gives everything she has during the game and refuses to quit.”
